Acoustic Testing at ACE

Acoustic Array

ACE is home to a custom-configured Acoustic Array.

Our Acoustic Array features 108 microphones on 18 arms, creating a half circle which utilizes the sound reflection off the ground plane of the chamber to create a "virtual" full circle array. Used for Noise Source Identification, the Acoustic Array has a camera which allows the software to capture a picture and overlay the noise locations onto the test object, making it a very powerful evaluation tool.

Sectors

This technology can be used for any sector that has a need to evaluate wind noise, structure borne noise, squeaks, rattles, and more. The array is sized to allow viewing of a full-sized vehicle, but it can be utilized for many other sectors and segments.

Key Features

  • Operating temperature range -10°C to 55°C
  • Microphone frequency range is 50Hz to 20kHz
  • Spatial resolution of 1.2*λ (wavelength of sound) over the operating frequency range of 250Hz to 10kHz
  • System dynamic range is 10dB over operating frequency range
  • System has additional channels to accommodate extra reference microphones and binaural head
  • System is expandable to incorporate further side or top arrays, and/or an interior spherical array

Acoustic Array

Our Acoustic Array is portable; it is most often utilized in the Climatic Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel (CAWT) or in the Hemi-Anechoic Chamber (MAST). Due to sound waves bouncing off all surrounding surfaces, noise location can be difficult to determine. The software used for our acoustic array is configurable to know the current windspeed and location of the shear layer to correct the data to align with the picture.
